School Health – Tools for Educators

RCDHU’s School Health team now offers a digital hub of educational resources and materials to assist educators in delivering the Ontario Health and Physical Education Curriculum effectively. RCDHU is committed to supporting educators by steering them towards valuable curriculum-aligned resources where they can access important information and lesson plans.

Teachers and educators gain access to resources, including facilitator guides, interactive multimedia resources, and engaging activities for students. These materials are tailored to align with different grade levels and educational objectives. Please see below.

Always Changing (Grades 5-8)

  • School-based puberty education and healthy, active living program and is endorsed and promoted by PHE Canada and Ophea. Always Changing provides user-friendly, free downloadable teacher guides, student manuals and worksheets.

Healthy Bodies Education Activities (Grades K-12)

  • The Healthy Bodies Education Activities will provide students with an opportunity to be introduced to, and expand their knowledge of, various growth and development topics such as body awareness, healthy and safe relationships, and personal choices about one’s body.

Human Development and Sexual Health – Ottawa Public Health: Gr. 4-12

  • Ottawa Public Health offers Google Slides and a Facilitator Guide for various grade levels focusing on Human Development and Sexual Health.

Human Development and Sexual Health – OPHEA: K-12

  • Assists in the creation of age-appropriate lessons and instructional strategies related to Human Development and Sexual Health.

Teaching Sexual Health: Gr. 4-12

  • Online lesson plans, teaching tools, group activities, and videos for teachers and parents.

School Mental Health Ontario: K-8

  • This resource helps elementary educators integrate mental health practices into their classrooms.

Mental Health Literacy – Ottawa Public Health: K-12

  • Ottawa Public Health offers Google Slides and a Facilitator Guide for various grade levels focusing on Mental Health.

Mental Health – OPHEA: K-12

  • Supports educators and program leaders in promoting positive mental health and overall well-being with children and youth ages 6-18. Includes lesson plans, activity cards, videos and posters.

Stress Lessons: Gr. 7-9 and Stress Lessons: Gr. 9-12

  • A national organization with supportive resources and information for young people. The toll-free number is available 24/7 for individuals to call for support.

Beyond Images: Gr. 4-8

  • Online lesson plans address media literacy and negative stereotypes. Curriculum provides the opportunity to explore key issues in today’s society around body image and self-esteem.

My Tool Kit: Gr. 7-12

  • The site includes mobile apps, modules, and facilitator guides. Topics include: stress, wellness, substance use and starting high school.

Strong Minds Strong Kids – Psychology Canada: K-12

  • Resources for children and youth, parents and child-caring professionals. Includes a series of webinars for parents and educators.

Substance Use Health, Addiction and Related Behaviours – Ottawa Public Health: Gr. 4-12

  • Ottawa Public Health offers Google Slides and a Facilitator Guide for various grade levels focusing tobacco, vaping, alcohol, cannabis, and opioids.

Substance Use, Addictions and Related Behaviours – OPHEA: Gr. 1-12

  • This resource uses a proactive approach to create a positive and supportive environment for students ages 6-18. Includes easy to use activity cards that are linked to the Health and Physical Education curriculum.

Cannabis Education Resources – OPHEA: Gr. 5-12

  • A collection to teach cannabis education and encourage students to make informed decisions that support their health and well-being.

iMinds – University of Victoria: K-12

  • These resources cover specific competencies related to drug and gambling literacy. They offer flexible lesson ideas to explore various ways of addressing health and well-being across different subjects within the curriculum.

Cannabis – Lung Health Foundation: Gr. 7-12

  • This series of three activity guides is intended to engage young people in exploring lung health related to the use of tobacco, cannabis, vaping and water pipes through interactive activities, while inspiring critical thinking and reflection.

Pursue Your Passion – A Teen Cannabis Education Program: Gr. 7-12

  • Provides cannabis educational resources to help teachers increase teens’ awareness of the effects of cannabis use on their brain and mental health.

Vaping: What Elementary School Educators Need to Know – School Mental Health Ontario, Centre of Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH)

  • Provides general information about vaping and outlines important facts, associated risks, and additional resources to support educators.

Stop Vaping Challenge – VIBED: Gr. 9-12

  • VIBED offers youth-focused vaping education workshops to provide resources for quitting vaping, available in various formats for tailored delivery.

Not an Experiment

  • Provides vaping prevention, education, and cessation resources, including an interactive escape room, posters, PA announcements, and lesson plans. If you use any of the NAE resources, please complete the reach tracker to help us capture the reach of NAE across Ontario.

Consider the Consequences of Vaping

  • Interactive games, educational videos, a self-led module, and resources providing information about nicotine, the hidden dangers of vaping, and the cost of vaping.

Understanding Substance Use: Educator’s Guide – Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction

  • Designed for educators working with youth from grades 6–12 to gain knowledge, tools and resources on substance use. Using this guide with the supporting video modules can help educators start and navigate difficult conversations with youth on these subjects.

Cannabis Info Sheet: What Educators Need to Know – School Mental Health Ontario

Talking About Series (Grade 7-12) 

  • This educational resource addressing cannabis, tobacco, vaping, and waterpipes includes a set of activity guides to help facilitate critical discussion with young people.

The High Way Home? (Grade 10-12)

  • This interactive web site developed by the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) guides users through real life scenarios where they must make decisions about cannabis use and driving.

  • This site includes helpful information about safety, inclusion, and scheduling, as well as printable activity sheets, and videos of activities.

ODPH School Nutrition Resources

  • Evidence based resources developed by ODPH members to support best practices related to healthy eating and nutrition in elementary and secondary schools in Ontario.

Teaching Canada’s Food Guide

  • The toolkit is intended for use by health and education intermediaries that work with children aged 4 to 11, to help them explore foods, learn food skills, develop healthy eating habits, and understand Canada’s food guide.

Eating Disorders Ontario – Prevention

  • This is a comprehensive slide-deck outlining the importance of promoting student mental and physical health to limit prevalence of disordered eating and eating disorders.

OPHEA Professional Learning

  • Virtual nutrition training opportunities relating to Canada’s Food Guide, HP&E curriculum, and grocery shopping.

  • NEDIC curriculum which provides an opportunity to delve into key societal issues like body image, self-esteem, and media messaging, all while fostering critical thinking skills.

Internet Safety Resources – OPHEA: Gr. 4-6

  • Resources to educate kids to be safe on the Internet by applying real life behaviour to life online.

Ontario Road Safety – CAA South Central Ontario: JK-12

  • Cross-curricular lesson plans, as well as a community engagement toolkit. The site is searchable by available topics as well as individual lesson plans.

Media Smarts: JK-12

  • Lessons and resources for teachers. Topics include blogging, cell phones and texting, alcohol marketing, diversity in media, and cyberbullying.

Professional Resources – Parachute

  • Offers evidence-based materials, including lesson plans and activities, to integrate injury prevention into classroom teaching.
